Pérez-Llorca and Mexican law firm González Calvillo complete their merger

15/07/2024

The partners of both firms have voted in favour of the merger at their respective meetings, and the relevant regulatory approvals have been obtained

  • The integration is the first cross-border merger between a leading Iberian law firm and a top-tier Mexican practice
  • The project aims to create the leading legal practice in Mexico, serving clients on both sides of the Atlantic, large multinationals and financial sponsors, as well as other international law firms

Pérez-Llorca and González Calvillo have completed their merger, announced in April, following the favourable vote of the partners of both firms and the receipt of the regulatory approvals required for this type of transaction.

With this merger, Pérez-Llorca becomes one of the largest legal practices in Mexico, with an initial platform of 100 lawyers and around 160 professionals in its offices in Mexico City and Monterrey. The partners of González Calvillo become partners of Pérez-Llorca through the first merger of two leading firms in Mexico and the Iberian Peninsula. The two firms have worked together for clients around the world for the last 20 years, so this transaction builds on a strong relationship.

The aim of this integration is to develop Mexico’s premier legal practice, with a leading position in major transactions, financings, transnational litigation and regulatory matters, providing a comprehensive service to clients on both sides of the Atlantic, large multinationals and financial sponsors, as well as other international law firms. To this end, a major investment strategy will be implemented and the necessary financial resources will be allocated to strengthen the Mexican teams and continue the expansion of the practice.

The firm will now offer, on a global level, the most comprehensive and highest quality legal services in Spanish, Portuguese, European and Mexican law, from the firm’s offices in Barcelona, Brussels, Mexico City, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Monterrey, New York and Singapore, where nearly 500 lawyers and a total of 800 professionals will work. Pérez-Llorca’s global pro forma sales for the last 12 months, including the Mexican operation, are estimated to be US$160 million.

Mexico and Spain, in addition to being the two largest Spanish-speaking economies, are connected by strong cultural ties and there is a high degree of integration between their business communities, which makes this country a natural market for the firm to continue to grow and develop.

We believe that the strong and sophisticated Mexican legal industry will continue to develop, grow and consolidate in the coming years, and we believe we have the willingness and ability to contribute positively and significantly to that process”, stated Pedro Pérez-Llorca, senior partner of Pérez-Llorca, following the closing of this merger.

The merger with Pérez-Llorca makes us the largest Hispanic-American law firm, which will allow us to serve our clients on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as boost our close relationship with the most important law firms in the United States, Europe and Latin America”, said Enrique González Calvillo, founding partner of González Calvillo.

According to Partner Rodrigo Rojas, “our integration represents a milestone in the Mexican legal market and places us in a unique and strong position to offer our Mexican and foreign clients first class legal services through our offices around the world.

Iván Delgado, Pérez-Llorca’s international executive partner, emphasised that “this merger makes us stronger and more competitive to face the complex challenges of an increasingly internationalised legal market, where transactions and disputes go beyond the borders of their countries of origin.”
