A challenge for companies and for regulators
The last formal step for the Artificial Intelligence Act, which was formally adopted on 13 March, was signed today. The AI Act is due to be published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) in mid-July 2024. It aims to harmonise AI rules among Member States, balancing innovation and technological development with the protection of health, safety, and fundamental rights of citizens. The development process of the Act was extensive and complex, starting with publications and communications in 2018 and culminating with its approval in 2024. The Act will generally come into force 20 days after its publication in the OJEU, and will be fully applicable after 24 months, with some exceptions.
Today we present the fifth issue of our publication series on AI. In this issue, we analyse the most significant aspects of the adopted text, the legal and business implications, and offer some practical recommendations on how to align the economic activities of any affected company with the Act.
