Rafael Fernández has joined Pérez-Llorca as Counsel of Insurance and Reinsurance in the Madrid office to develop this new practice area.
Fernández has over 10 years of experience in the insurance sector, in which he has advised national and international insurance and reinsurance entities on commercial, regulatory and procedural law.
Before joining Pérez-Llorca, Fernández held the role of Vice President, Legal Counsel at the head office of the insurance firm Swiss Re Europe in Luxembourg. Prior to this, he worked as a lawyer in two prestigious international firms where he took part in a wide variety of matters related to the insurance sector, including corporate acquisition and sale transactions of insurance entities, bancassurance alliances, portfolio transfers, litigation advice due to refusals of coverage, civil liability claims, secretariat services for Boards of Directors and the provision of regulatory advice for commencing activity in Spain. Fernández also formed part of the legal team for the World Bank’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) in Washington DC, where he was involved in insurance against political risks.
Fernández has a degree in Law and Business Administration from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a Master’s degree in Law with honours from the University of Georgetown and is a professor of Commercial and Trade Law at the IE Law School. Additionally, he was recognised by the international directory Legal 500 in the category of ‘Next Generation Lawyer’ for two consecutive years.
Fernández joins Pérez-Llorca’s Insurance and Reinsurance team led by partner Joaquín Ruiz Echauri. Alongside him, he will strengthen this new practice area which was set up to provide global and multidisciplinary advice to entities and professionals related to the insurance sector.
